For learning music (such as for playing an instrument) much of what I have learned has come from creating original compositions to treat as practice pieces. The impetus for these have often come from an initial intrigue with a new chord, a new rhythm, a sequence of notes, a technique of playing, a concept of music theory being applied, etc. At times this may also involve the adding of melodic lines, harmonies, the writing of lyrics, the composition of song parts, etc. Most often though, the end result has been for these to be just guitar or keyboard practice pieces.
